The Yard

Working in the yard is a delight for us. Fortunately, it is something Granddaddy and I both enjoy.

Granddaddy loves to pamper the grass. He fertilizes and waters and mows. He applies Roundup and weedkillers and antkiller. We do not want those grandbabies to be bothered with antbites. He has our yard on the Scott's Plan. He follows it almost to a "T." He missed using "winterizer" this year, but he said he won't do it again!

I love plants . . . all kinds of plants. I like to sit on the porch or under a tree and look across the yard, fashioning a new flower bed in my mind. Sometimes, I'll get right up and grab a shovel and start digging! My dog gets so excited!

Granddaddy and I both grew up with parents who had the same fondness for the yard as we have. Unfortunately, in our adult lives we have never lived anywhere for more than 3 years at a time. We have worked in many yards and someone else is now enjoying the fruits of our labors. Hopefully, that will be no more.

Two years ago we moved into the place where we now live. We have a very large backyard - - a grandkid paradise! We NEVER plan to move again! But, what a mess this yard was in. Twenty years of renters had taken its toll. Granddaddy said mowing the yard was like mowing a hayfield. Of course, there was no landscaping of any kind. The front yard had one lone rosebush (who knows how it survived) and 3 dwarf boxwoods under a window. Once again, we had our work cut out for us!

We've come a long way in a very short time and have a long way yet to go. But, we can already enjoy sipping a glass of tea under the trees, watching the squirrels and rabbits and birds and butterflies. Hey! Is that one of my grandchildren up in the treehouse??
